Therapeutic Massage

Massage is a generic term used to describe a variety of techniques that involve touch, pressure, kneading, and manipulation of soft tissues for therapeutic purposes.

There are many different types of massage such as Swedish, Thai, Ayurvedic, Remedial, and Sports masagge. The methods used in each type of massage are determined by the culture from which it originates, and the philosophy behind it. In addition, individual practitioners are likely to develop their own particular style besed on their skills, interests, philosophy, and experience with different client groups.

The therapeutic approach

I have developed my personal massage style through years of practising in the community with people who have serious physical and emotional illnesses. My training as a Reiki and Acupuncture practitioner has also influenced my approach. I see and use massage as a therapeutic tool to relieve energetic blockages manifested in the muscles and superficial tissues of the body.

A combination of Therapeutic massage and Acupuncture has proven through the years to be extremely effective for chronic and acute back pain. This combination now constitutes my standard approach for the treatment of back pain.

Benefits of massage

Massage is often used as a "treat" and many people only appreciate its ability to induce relaxation. Although it is true that it can induce a state of bliss, massage is in fact a powerful therapeutic tool. I use massage alongside acupuncture when treating different kinds of pain, difficult mobility, or stiffness whether acute or chronic. Conditions that respond well to this treatment approach include:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tennis elbow
  • Torticollis (stiff neck)
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Acute and chronic back ache
  • Sciatic pain
  • Injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Neuralgias and trapped nerves
  • Stiffness, pain, and lack of mobility following a stroke

In addition, regular therapeutic massage can provide many benefits such as:

  • Release of muscular tension and improve posture
  • Relief in joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness
  • Improvement in circulation
  • Enhanced Immune system
  • Pain relief, due to the release of natural painkillers
  • Release of deep-seated emotions that can often manifest as physical disease
  • Increase in the elimination of waste products that may accumulate in the tissues
  • Improved appearance of the skin
